Lifelines : Personality portraits by Soumya Sitaraman

Soumya Sitaraman's ongoing series, Lifelines, documents the development of an individual’s identity in "personality portraits".

Identity and personality evolve as we ford through testing life situations that force each of us to make choices in search of a sense of balance in this diverse world.

Some of us emerge as resilient survivors.

The whorls of a thumbprint are as singular as the private journeys people take toward self-knowledge and definition.

Through storytelling, the series illustrates how people in diverse circumstances have resolved issues to achieve their sense of self .

To create these portraits, Sitaraman visually imprints her subject's fluid and alterable, intangible sense sense of self over the individual's unchanging thumbprint.

This Lifeline of support aims to expand awareness in inclusion and diversity by providing a bookmark about personality and personal choice resolution in this multicultural world.

The series includes mixed media installation and oil on canvas embellished with surface embroidery following the contours of a thumb print.

Each of the carefully chosen participants in the project are powerful in their own right. They have made difficult personal choices and come to a sense of balance with their place in this diverse world. Many are fellow artists, and each a representative of a different ethnic or personal choice pool.

Life in all its forms is to be celebrated.
